History of the Voorneveld family from 1700 |

The following is copied from a
handwritten series of small, thin paper sheets that were
stitched together on a sewing machine - backward. I believe it
to be Fred J. Voorneveld's handwriting. He is our Grandfather.
(I took some liberties with punctuation to make it clearer, on
occasion.)

FAMILY RECORD OF VOORNEVELD
Beginning my great, great Grant Father
Voorneveld ard traced by T.J. Voorneveld.
Pieter Voorneveld was born in the year
1700, the exact year could not be found. (moet veel later zijn)
He married a Fair maiden of the Dutch zais her name was Johana
van der Berg. I have been unable to find out about his Brothers
and Sisters. But the couple were blessed with four children, one
son and three daughters. The son's name was John Theodore. The
daughters were as follows: Clara Charlotta, Hendrica and
Cornelia.
John Theodore, that is my Grand
Father, married a young woman with the name of Anthonia
Elisabeth Bekker. Clara Charlotta married a van der Vaart.
Hendrica married a Wismeijer. John Theodore and his
wife Antonia Elisabeth raised a family of ten children. Clara
Charlotta did not have any children. Hendrica had four children
and Cornelia had five children.
John Theodore and Antonia Elisabeth
had a family of Ten children. The names are as follows:

Pieter Johannus had four children, two
sons and two daughters. John Frederick had two children. Clara
Charlotta had four children and were girls. Gerarda Antonia had
two girls. Hendricus Cornelus * had eight children, four boys
and four girls. Frederick Jon had three children, one girl and
two boys. Johanna Theodora had three children, one son and two
daughters. Hermanus Hendricus had six children, tree boys and
tree girls. WiIliam had four children two boys and two girls.
John Theodore died when but a child. Hendricus Cornelus *
married a fine yong lady the name wass Magie Mariea Abidelman,
and were very lucky and prosperous in one respect. The names of
the children a are as follows:
Alida Johanna, Tonia Elisabeth,Dirkiena Johanna, John Theodorus, Dirk Gysbert,Hendicus Cornelus, Frederick John, Maggie Mariea.
The names of Frederick John's children
are: John Theodore, Herman and Bertha.
Johanna Theodora had three children, two daughters and one son. Hermanus Hendricus had six children, three daughters and three sons. William had four children, two daughters and two sons.
The third generation wass born as
follows:

Pieter Johannus, when but a boy, wass send out to the garden to drive of the birds and took up a gun and fired it and lost the use of the three middle fingers verry lucky it was his left hand. And later he got a very small pension after hiss long time in the Service and latter he did a little gardening, John Frederick he wass a verry prosperous man and well knew ofer the state wass also Gardener and had the care of a large place. The name of the place was het Slot Loeist (?) after a number of years of labor there he receved a Pension and lived very easy but only for a short time before he wass called up yonder and leave hise wife and daughter and one son aiid one son in America. William was a verry small man but what he done and what he knew he wass sure of he was all so well know arond in the state of hise ability and after about 20 years of service got a pension of service and is living in the same Town and still have some interest in the place in the line of game warden. Hermanus Hendricus, he is also a gardener and florist has also been dealer in real estate but more than 30 years ago went to America and hase traveld a good deal. But the most of the time hase lived in Mass. Hendricus Cornelius, (our great-grandfather) and hiss Beloved wife first took up a place in what is kno as Friesland in the upper part of Holland and lived there for some years. Till finally he got a good position at a Kastel kno as De Kastiel de Ham. (My mother visited this when she went to Holland.) He wass Gardener then till hiss dead and that wass for about 23 years. it wass like a little Paradise. The disease he had is called gravel in the bladder, a verry common disease today. The children of him were all born at the Kastel but two the oldest and the yongest, both girls. I will now give the births of the fourth generation: Alida Johanna Jan. 21, 1859 Tonia Elisabeth Dec. 2, 1861 Dirkiena Johanna April 14, 1864 John Theodore Feb. 5, 1866 (Our Great Uncle Ted) Dirk Gyobertus Dec. 18, 1864 Hendricus Cornelus Jan. 24, 1871 (My Mom wrote that he was in the Dutch merchant Marine and visited them a couple of times.) Frederick John April 21, 1874 (Our grandfather) Maggie Mariea Feb. 08, 1876 (She was the mother of Frans and Cre)
Alida Johanna married a W.H.Pieper
and have ben blest with acht children, four daughters and four
sons and are living in Amsterdam. He is a ship builder or a ship
carpenter. One of there sons is in the Army and the the other is
valorven the sea. (following the sea?).
Tonia Elisabeth married a A.v.d. WIllik, carpenter by trade but as hise wife has a store. The business was verry triving (thriving?) so he was forced to stay at home and help hise wife. They have a little girl about 13 years old. She is living in Utracht. Dirkiena Johanna married Jacob Griffiejoen, also a carpenter and have six children, three sons and three daughters and are living in a Town by the name of Bussem, John Theodore, the last I knew about him wass in North Adams Mass. he levt Holland March 15, 1890 and have ben back ones. it was in June 1904. (Sounds as tho he didn't apnrove of this don't you think?) Dirk Gysbert he is in the Military Bakery he had enlisted in the Army but after a short time was discharged on account of loosing hise eye sight and has a little pension. He had enlisted for six years but served only two years. But still works in the Bakery. he has ben married twise his first wife died and married for the second time and has tree children. he also lives in Utrecht. Hendricus Cornelus he has also served his time in the Army and after his time wass up he secured a position as a Conductor and has filled the place well. has served for over ten years. He also conduct a store it is Grogeries and Grain at a small scale. He has had ten children. two of them are living. He is at the present time living in Utrecht. Maggie Mariea she married a yong man from the town she was born. his name is Piet Kooren. he is Painter and hase a good business. They have two children, one daughter and one son. She is living about one mile and a half from her birth place, the name is Vleuten. ( Frans Kooren, our Mother's cousin, married Dickie ?, and she is the one who sends gifts and letters to my Mom.) Last but not least, Frederik John, when but a boy in hise teens came to America at the age of 16 years. hiss first birth day he spend it down the Cape Cod he lived in the shoe city Brockton, Mass. from there he went to Framingham Centre, Mass. and from there to South Framingham and worked there for nearly four years, till he went to New Hampshire and worked in Centre Harbor, N.H. The year he came to the U.S.A. was April 1, 1890 he left hise home in Leist (or Zeist) March 15, 1890 after being in thise noble land for some years he married at the age of 21 years to Alice T.Hawkins of Centre Harbor, N.H. and lived at the old home about one year and after a space of time moved to Meredith. He got work at the Elm Hotel for about one year and worked for Geo. H. Clark and Co. about two years and for Edwin Cox 11 years. April 1st 1909 he was assisten mail carrier from March 1, 1892 till April 1. 1893 and wass the first mail carrier from that Post Office in the year 1904 Oct. 4 he went to hise old home across the water and return Nov. 16, 1904. He became a citensen of the United States June 6. 1901. |
